"What the greatest minds have ultimately sought from art is knowledge, a true or 'metaphysical' knowledge, capable of reaching beyond the external appearance of phenomena in order to lead us to their intimate essence"
Michael Henry on Kandinsky
I create vibrant, colorful abstract paintings in acrylic that are inspired by my study and embrace of spiritual teachings. My work is a reflection of the energy and beauty that surrounds us every moment, both seen and unseen, that which is within and without.
To create my paintings I enjoy using the gestural brushstroke and certain universal symbols such as the circle that express wholeness and life’s journey. The brushstroke, using large house painting brushes or fine Chinese calligraphy brushes is an important part of the process.
Generally, I paint on different sized canvases, but also like to experiment with acrylic on metal. I always paint to music, which puts my brain into a state of consciousness that opens me to the present moment, to my intuition, to what the painting is saying.
For me, painting is a meditation on the cosmos, on the mysterious unseen energy field we live in, the radiance of being. My art is informed by eastern philosophy, specifically Buddhist and Theosophical teachings and a growing understanding of metaphysics. By connecting to the cosmos I feel a part of something greater and my paintings reflect a connection to that universal life force. There is a sense of the luminous sacred that infuses the world that draws and inspires me.
Artist Biography
Carolyn Wayland is an abstract painter whose works reflects her worldview. For her, the creation of art is tuning in to the cosmic energies and spiritual dimension of existence which have become the essence of her non- representational paintings.
Carolyn’s inspiration comes directly from her passion for nature, her love of study and contemplation and her search for the truth. A west coast girl, she grew up in Kentfield, California, and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a BA in Comparative Literature.
After that, she discovered the world of visual art through ceramics and lived and taught art in Eugene, Oregon, Orcas Island, Washington for many years. Later, she and her husband moved to Tubac, Arizona, where she came to love and appreciate the beauty of the Southwest as well as the Northwest landscapes. She has a Master’s degree in Art Education, and was an art teacher for 34 years before beginning a twenty year painting adventure.
Carolyn Wayland has always been inspired by the beauty and energy of the natural world, and she and her photographer husband hiked and camped throughout the Northwest and Southwest beginning in the 1990s. During that time she developed a curiosity about astrology, cosmology and Theosophical writings, which connected her to the unseen universe and the energy and universal laws of the cosmos.
Both Theosophical and Buddhist studies have increasingly transformed Carolyn’s work into a meditation, both for herself and for the viewer. She attempts to convey concepts and meaning through her work. “This is how I speak my truth.”
Carolyn has exhibited at the Monserrat Gallery in New York City, at numerous exhibits and art studio tours in Arizona, Washington and California. In the recent past she has exhibited at both the Russian River Gallery, Guerneville, CA and the Lori Austin Gallery in Healdsburg CA. Her art was featured on the cover and interior of Quest Magazine in 20125 and featured in a 2024 review in The Theosophist, “Painting the /Cosmos, A Key to the Influence of Theosophy on Modern Art” by Michael Carter. Carolyn currently lives and works in Sant Rosa, California.
